Whatever I say about the rituals and customs of Kerala Muslims would be with regard to the religious and social lives of Sunni Muslims. Though there are four schools of thought in Sunnis, namely, Shafi, Hanafi, Hanbali and Maliki, Kerala Muslims mainly comprise the Shafi sect. Therefore what I am describing here are the Ramaḍan and Eid customs of the Shafi Sunnis in Kerala.

As you know, fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam, others include, doing namaz five times a day, going on the Hajj and giving zakat.* The Malayalam equivalent for namaz is ‘niskaram’, a word which might have its origin in the Sanskrit word ‘namaskaram’. In Kerala the Arabic word ‘salat’ (usually pronounced ‘salah’ in Arab countries), is never used for namaz, but the word is used in another context, for here there is a practice of singing the glory of the Prophet and such performances are normally called, ‘Salat Cholluka’ (the rendering of Salat).

The word Ramadan derives from the root 'ramad', meaning ‘that which is intensely and harshly heated by the sun’. And the word 'ramdhaa' means the intense heat of the sun. Ramadan was named as such because it burns up the sins of the believers. In Kerala, though the month is called Ramadan, we don’t use the word ‘Saum’ for the fast. The Malayalam word for the fast is truly Dravidian, ‘nomb’, which came from the Malayalam equivalent for observance, ‘nolkkuka’.

In contrast to my childhood, fasting is now spread across all sections of society. In the 1960s, I remember the rich males of the community never observed the fast. It was meant for women and for the poor male members of the community. I still remember the labourers who were not allowed to have a drop of water during Ramadan lying exhausted in front of the mosques. My own family was relatively well off, and the men never observed the fast. As I see it, in Kerala half a century back, fasting was meant for women of all classes, for the poorer classes of men, and for religious or spiritual leaders. However, it has now changed to become a practice common to all.

In Kerala, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan is called ‘athaazham’, the Malayalam word for the dinner. The next meal is ‘Magrib’, meaning dusk. Madarsas and some of the lower primary schools that follow the Muslim calendar are closed during Ramadan.

Of Dates, Fasting and Feasting

Dates figure in many stories about the Prophet, who is said to have created a species of seedless date. In Kerala, as in the Gulf countries, people break the fast by taking dates, and during Ramadan a wide variety of dates are imported to Kerala. From ancient times Kerala has imported dates from the port of Basra in Iraq, a practice that has even contributed a proverb to Malayalam, ‘Ningal Basarayilekku Kaarakka Kayatti Ayakkaruth’ (‘You should not export dates to Basra’).

An evergreen Malayalam folk song penned by the famous poet PT Abdul Rahman addresses traders from Arabia, ‘Kaamila Ketti Varunnavare, Kaarakka Thottangal Kandavare’. (‘He who visits us in desert caravans, who has seen the date-palm gardens’).

During my childhood, most people in Kerala could not afford even three meals a day. During Ramadan people mostly took pathiri (rice flour dosa) or tharikanji (semolina gruel). Those days Ramadan was meant for night-long prayers and day-long fasting. Now during this month you get almost all varieties of Arabic food in Kerala, and lots of festivities alongside. If you see the newspapers and television, you may get the impression that Ramadan is more a month for feasting than for fasting. In Kerala now it has almost become a culinary festival of Malabar cuisines. To give just one example, traditional Muslims families in northern Kerala could make at least 20 varieties of egg dishes…and the newspapers discuss these matters much more than the prayers and spiritual aspects of Ramadan.

Olive Pickle and the Harbour of Truth

An interesting story of a century ago refers to the relations between Arab traders and the Malabar Coast. A sultan from Arabia sent traders with jars of olive pickle to give every royal family on the Kerala coast, with the request to keep the container for the traders to collect on their return from Ceylon a few months later. The containers were duly collected and presented back to the Sultan. The story goes that the Sultan had placed gold beneath the pickle in all the jars, and only the Samoothiri, the king of Kozhikode, had returned both gold and pickle intact, so the Sultan realized that the king of Kozhikode would be the most trustworthy trading partner. This legend gave Kozhikode its name, ‘Sathyathinde Thuramukham’ (harbour of truth), from which derives the title of historian MGS Narayanan’s book on Kozhikode, Calicut: the City of Truth Revisited (2007).

Hajj, Tears and a Malayalam Film

The Hajj pilgrimage pre-dates the Prophet’s time. What the Prophet did was only to revise the tradition. Even some 50 years back, going on the Hajj was very rare in Kerala. The first reason was poverty. The second reason was that most of those who had attempted the Hajj had not returned. Those days one had to take a train from Kozhikode to Bombay, from where it took another ten days by sea to reach Jeddah. I personally am aware of many cases of pilgrims dying on that arduous voyage. I remember when people set out on the Hajj they would leave at home a piece of cloth that was meant to cover their dead body when it was returned. I remember hearing heart-breaking cries in households as pilgrims bid farewell. When someone went for the Hajj his return was expected after four months. A clean or fresh Window 10 installation size took 11.6 GB, though recommended free space is 16 GB for 32-bit OS and 20 GB for 64-bit OS, it is advisable to have a partition with more free space so that you can install more software and games. For this test we also installed Windows 10 on a partition which was 12GB in size and it occupied around 11.6GB leaving just 300MB.

^^ This will applies to you when Windows is installed on C:/ drive which is just 20GB.

Test 2 C:/ is 50GB+. Tested with: Windows 10 Nov 2019 update.

We installed Windows 10 on C:/ with 50GB+ Free Space and it took roughtly 25GB (24.4GB to b exact.

We also tested Windows 10 version 2004 (Pro edition 64-bit) on M.2 SSD it took similarly around 24.5GB and 25GB with Google Chrome installed.

At least 20+ GB will be used on your windows installation partition. But if a partition has near 20-30 GB and on storage limits, Windows 10 has a special feature** that will automatically compress some system files to keep working fine. But you can also do this manually, in rough figure this feature is likewise able to compress 5GB into 3GBb but that’s the limit. You can not compress everything in the windows directory.
** run Compact.exe /CompactOS:always in CMD to free up about 2GB space by compacting Windows file.

How big is windows 10 (ISO and system images)

A Windows 10 Pro edition would be around 3 to 5GB with standerd install.wim file.

• x86 English Windows 10 ISO = 3.xx GB
• x64 English Windows 10 ISO = 5.xx GB

Windows 10 Single language home edition saves a few MB in file size.

• x86 Single Edition English Windows 10 ISO = 3.x GB
• x64 Single Edition English Windows 10 ISO = 4.x GB

Though size may vary but not much. You can get official Windows 10 ISO using this guide. If you build a multi-edition ISO file it will take more space. For a single 32-bit + 64-bit the ISO will be around 3 to 5GB in space with compressed install.esd while install.wim file could be more than 5GB. ESD have better compression ratio but it takes longer to build one.

Windows 10 version 21H1

UUP files = 2.9 GB (x64) Download Windows 10 UUP files.

• With standerd Install.WIM Size = 3.7GB
• With compress Install.ESD Size = 2.7 GB
• ISO with Install.esd = 3.35GB

Installing Windows 10 on SSD:

Roughly around the same as required on normal hard disks. As SSD (Solid-state drive) are faster so is windows 10 when you have an SSD. Having a solid-state drive will help the operating system to boot faster and work flawlessly. When tested on both ADATA SSD (C:/ 50GB) and M.2 Silicon power (C:/ 100GB) both were filled 20GB.

On the other hand, if there is suppose, C;/ is just 20GB then windows 10 manages to get installed in just 12 GB.

Installing from USB

Making a bootable USB from a Windows 10 ISO depends on its architecture. BTW a 4GB USB drive is enough for both 32-bit or 64-bit ISO. However, in case of multiple edition ISO, you may need at least 8GB USB drive.

New device: 2 gigabytes (GB) RAM for 32-bit or 64-bit
Update: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit

My Windows 10 installation took around ~20 GB despite the fact that I’ve installed around 20 programs. You can also use the Disk Cleanup tool to gain some free space on Windows installation partition.

When You Don’t have Required Space to Install Windows 10.

It is very unlikely because today an average computer has around 500 GB Hard Disk. Maybe you have files on your disk or you Installed Windows 10 over any older windows. This might leave a Windows.old folder inside the Windows installation directory. You can clear the folder by going to Disk Cleanup > Clean System Files > Tick Old windows backup > Clean it.

Additionally, you enable the ‘Compress this drive to disk space‘ in Local Disk (C:)’s properties. This may make the program’s execution a bit slower than usual.

Run Windows apps on your Mac with this handy emulation tool.

Running Windows on a Mac has been a quest for all switchers and 'tweeners since the introduction of Intel based Macs in 2005/2006. It hasn't been an easy go, either. Options are limited to either Apple's Boot Camp, which lets you create a separate partition and boot into Windows natively, or to virtual machines like Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion. Each option has its pros and cons; and almost all of your options really required a machine with a great deal of punch in order to get past the performance hits you're going to take, especially in a VM option. This is why I'm very excited about CrossOver. It’s a multiplatform Windows emulation tool that works on your Mac.

CrossOver is a commercial version of Wine; and allows you to install many popular Windows applications on your Mac or Linux computer. You can think of it as an emulator, but it's different, because it doesn't require a Windows OS license. Your applications seamlessly integrate into Mac OS X. All you need to do is just click and run and app. You don’t' have to reboot or switch to a virtual machine; and most importantly, you don't have to buy Windows.

Adding new Windows software is easy. All you have to do is insert the install CD in your machine. CrossOver will recognize it and offer to install it. Once installed, CrossOver will configure the application to run on your Mac.

The application comes in two different versions – Standard and Professional. CrossOver Standard provides individual users with the ability to run a wide variety of Windows software cleanly and economically. CrossOver Professional is meant for corporate users, and provides them with the enhanced deployment and management features an enterprise environment demands.

Pros: No Windows license fees needed or required. Works on your Mac or Linux box. Runs applications as a native Mac/Linux application.

Cons: Won't run EVERY Windows application. Those requiring specific graphical support may not run well or may not run at all. MS Office 2010, for example will not install or run correctly, according to the CrossOver Compatibility Database.

Conclusion: CrossOver is perhaps one of the best little known gems of the emulation/virtual machine world. A commercial version of Wine, it runs a lot of games, but may not run some of the productivity software you're looking for. However, its cost is very reasonable; and its performance is decent, though you will likely see some level of performance hit. CrossOver is well worth its cost, especially if you really just need to run one or two Windows based apps on your Mac. Depending on your need for support and updates, CrossOver Pro may be a better value for you than CrossOver Standard. Just make sure you understand what you want to run, your support needs and have checked the Compatibility Database before you buy.

It has multiple functions for creating good quality stacks for further processing: Combining single exposures using different algorithms (you can choose which one you want to use) - median, mean, max, or min.     If you’ve done any night photography, then you’re likely very familiar with the noise of exposures in low light using a high ISO. But the noise isn’t all just from the high ISO. If you exposure for a longer period of time, you’ll capture more light, and have a higher signal to noise ratio, meaning less noise. A higher signal will result in less noise even with a high ISO (depending on your camera, modern sensors are much better). However, when shooting the Milky Way you’re usually going for short star trails, or completely pinpoint (trail-less) stars, which means you’re limited in how long you can expose before the stars appear to move too much in the frame. So you’re stuck using a shutter speed that isn’t long enough to capture enough light for a high signal, and having to use a high ISO as well to boost the signal to a usable level, which can add additional noise to the image (although how much depends on your camera).
    The result is that you’re usually shooting with a shutter speed that captures enough light for tolerable noise, but it’s also probably long enough that the stars trail in the frame. If you try shooting with a short enough shutter speed to capture completely motionless stars, the noise level can be so high (depending on your camera and lens f-stop) that the exposure is either unusable or needs a ridiculous amount of noise reduction, resulting in large size prints that can look very grainy or blocky due noise or noise reduction. Noise reduction tools these days are great, but they can’t fix everything all the time.
    Fortunately there are ways to capture both pinpoint stars and achieve low noise. You can either use a star tracker with very long shutter speeds to capture a lot of light and thus a high signal to noise ratio, or you can use star stacking, a method of capturing multiple photos with shorter shutter speeds that are then aligned and averaged in software to reduce noise. Or you can combine a star tracker with star stacking for incredibly low noise.

    What About a Star Tracker?

    Before we get into star stacking, you might be wondering if you could just us a star tracker, a device that sits on top of your tripod and turns with the rotation of the earth so that your camera can follow the stars, capturing long exposures with no star movement. You can certainly do this, but that requires lugging around the star tracker, and polar aligning the tracker every time you move your tripod. This is fine if you’re just doing shots of the sky without a foreground, but if you’re capturing the foreground then it will blur in the star tracked exposures, so if you want a sharp foreground you’ll need a separate exposure (or more than one) of the foreground with the tracker turned off. I do this anyways even without a tracker so that I can get detail and low noise in my foreground. Blending the static foreground shot with the star tracker shot would require dealing with blending the blurred foreground of the star tracker shot with the sharp foreground of the static shot. So, the blending gets more complex.
    Also, there is no real benefit to a star tracker for wide angle astro shots. Stacking 20 shots of 10 seconds each will result in essentially the same image as if you had taken a single shot for 200 seconds with a tracker (20 shots x 10 seconds = 200 seconds). The stacking shots combine to produce the accumulated shutter speed (amount of light hitting the sensor). The benefits of a tracker are when you are using long lenses and shooting deep space objects that require the camera to move in order for the object to stay within the field of view of the long focal length.

    What is Star Stacking?

    Star stacking is a method of overlaying multiple night sky exposures of the same composition, aligning the images so the stars all line up between each exposure, then averaging the brightness & color values of those exposures, producing a result with far less noise than a single exposure. The noise differs between each exposure, and even from pixel to pixel in the same exposure the noise differences can be high, so the averaging process greatly reduces that variation, resulting in a much smoother sky.
    You can extend this to get pinpoint stars by using a short enough shutter speed for your given focal length so that the stars do not appear to move in the frame. So you get the best of both worlds, pinpoint stars and low noise.

    Low Noise Foreground

    The star stacking method reduces noise in the entire image, not just the sky. Even though the sky is aligned separately from the foreground in the stacking process, the foreground area can still be stacked and averaged to reduce noise. Depending on the ambient light of the scene, this might mean that you don’t need to do any separate foreground exposures to get a foreground that has detail and is in focus with low noise. But, where I’m often shooting, this isn’t normally the case. I still will take separate foreground exposures at a lower ISO (normally ISO 1600), for longer shutter speeds (usually multiple minutes per exposure), and when needed I will change focus and take multiple foreground shots to get everything in focus.

    '200' is the sixth episode of the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1's tenth season, and the 200th episode of the series overall. Unlike the more serious nature of the season's story arc, '200' is a light-hearted parody of both Stargate SG-1 and other sci-fi shows, as well as popular culture like The Wizard of Oz.

    '200' won the 2007 Constellation Award for Best Overall 2006 Science Fiction Film or Television Script,^[1] and was nominated for the 2007 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.^[2] The episode also marks the first time original SG-1 member Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is seen since the beginning of Season 9.

    The episode received a 1.9 average household rating, one of the few episodes of the season that surpassed the average rating of Stargate SG-1's previous season. '200' also received near-universal praise for its humor and writing. Despite the strong performance of the episode, the Sci-Fi Channel announced soon after the episode's airing it would not be renewing the series for another season.

    Martin Lloyd (Willie Garson), an extraterrestrial turned Hollywood writer, returns to Stargate Command looking for assistance from SG-1 with his script for the movie adaptation of the television show Wormhole X-Treme,^[3] based on the exploits of the Stargate Program. The team, especially Lt. Colonel Mitchell (Ben Browder), is reluctant to help. Mitchell is excited about his next off-world mission because it marks his 200th trip through the Stargate. Technical glitches prevent the team from setting off on their mission. General Landry (Beau Bridges) orders SG-1 to help Lloyd, as the government believes a successful science fiction film about intergalactic wormhole travel will serve as a good cover story to keep the real Stargate program a secret.

    The notes session devolves into the team members pitching their own versions of a successful sci-fi film, including a zombie invasion (from Mitchell), a previously unseen mission where O'Neill became invisible (from Carter), 'tributes' to The Wizard of Oz and Farscape (from Vala), and Teal'c as a private investigator (from Teal'c himself). Also featured are a vignette of the team's mental image of a 'younger and edgier' SG-1 (sparked by the studio's suggestion to replace the original Wormhole X-Treme cast), a suggested scene by Martin that turns out to be both scientifically inaccurate and highly derivative of Star Trek, a re-imagined version of the SG-1 pilot episode where all the characters are marionettes in the style of the television series Thunderbirds, and an imagined wedding that features the return of General O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson). The studio decides to cancel the movie in favor of renewing the series. The end of the episode shifts ten years into the future, where the Wormhole X-Treme cast and crew celebrate their 200th episode, as well as renewed plans for a movie.

    Production[edit]

    '200' follows up on the events of the Season 4 episode 'Point of No Return' and the Season 5 episode 'Wormhole X-Treme'; the episodes feature the character of Martin and are self-referentially written. In comparison, '200' riffs on science fiction and genre television more broadly.^[4] In comparison to attitudes that fans are largely powerless and in opposition to producers, the episode posits fans as empowered shapers of entertainment.^[4]

    Executive producer Robert C. Cooper originally proposed they write a normal script for the 200th episode. However it soon became clear that deciding who would have the privilege of writing the 200th episode would be awkward. This led to the idea to create a sketch episode in the manner of Saturday Night Live, with each writer creating a vignette.^[5] The episode took shape when the writers thought to bring back Wormhole X-Treme and the character of Martin, and frame the whole episode as a notes session.^[6] By the end of the writing process the episode had turned into 'an homage to the cast, crew, and die-hard fans.'^[5]

    Stargate producers were not sure actor Richard Dean Anderson would return for the episode, so they devised many scenes where Anderson was 'in' the episode but not actually shown.^[6] However, Anderson was willing to return and appeared in several scenes. In the DVD special Stargate SG-1: Behind the 200th Cooper said, 'it was a big deal for us to have [him] back for the 200th episode. We obviously didn't think we could do it without him.'^[5]

    Despite the markedly different content of the episode, '200' took no longer to shoot than a normal episode, mainly because much of the filming took place on the briefing room set.^[7] On the other hand, the episode was much more expensive than a typical one, due to the unusual sequences. For example, the marionettes used in an elaborate spoof of the series were created by the Chiodo brothers, who also made the puppets for Team America: World Police; each puppet cost about US$25,000, and the wires pulling each puppet had to be readded by CGI in post production because they didn't show up well enough.^[8] Several existing sets were used as stand-ins; for example, the bridge of the Odyssey was used for a Star Trek: The Original Series spoof, while a set from the sister production Stargate: Atlantis was used as the chamber of the Wizard of Oz.^[8]

    In an interview about the tenth season of Stargate, Cooper and series co-creator Brad Wright stated that there was a fine line between the humor of regular episodes turning into camp. While jokes for the joke's sake are usually limited in normal episodes, the line between humor and camp is deliberately crossed frequently in '200'. The producers even talked about recreating a part of Blazing Saddles that breaks the fourth wall, but they could not afford the horses.^[9]

    The producers made sure that the episode was well-publicized, dropping hints that Anderson's character O'Neill would return for the episode.^[8] Joe Mallozzi, executive producer for the series, also hinted that series fans would finally meet the Furlings, an enigmatic race referenced in the second-season episode 'The Fifth Race' but never seen.^[8][10] Despite the outlandish scenes filmed for the episode, many of the writers' favorite moments did not make it to production due to time constraints. For example, Cooper noted that a Gilligan's Island skit was cut from the script.^[6]
